A mile in I knew I was at a pretty good pace and at mile 2 I knew I might possibly PR. I started to feel the effects of the heat as I went up the long gradual hill around 2.5 miles. The right song came on my iPod and I pushed through. I crossed the finish line with a new PR of 20 seconds! While my first reaction was beating myself up because I missed my 5K goal time by 15 seconds, I couldn't hang my head too low about a new PR on a day that I wasn't feeling it.
The Kennesaw Grand Prix offers runners a wide variety of 5K races (and 1-mile fun runs) from May to November. Perhaps one of my favorite on their schedule is the Elf Trot 5K. Yes, you got that right, an ELF TROT in July! It is time to celebrate Christmas in July! Momma K and I got out our festive red & green attire for this race. There were a number of runners, volunteers, and spectators that were dressed for the occasion - some more than others. I'm going to be honest, when I woke up I wasn't really feeling it. I knew how warm it was outside when we left home and the sun wasn't even up yet. There are some days that you don't "feel it" but you get it done because you love what you do. I also thought of the wonderful cause that I was supporting this morning - the Georgia Chapter of Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. The 1-Mile Fun Run took place before the 5K. It was awesome to cheer on the 1-Mile runners! There were a number of Atlanta Track Club Kilometer Kids out there rockin' it which was great to see. The course is fairly flat to Georgia standards. It is an out and back with a loop on a paved trail in the park. I started the race out comfortably and just rolled with it. It was a hot and humid morning and I didn't want to push myself too hard today. A mile in I knew I was at a pretty good pace and at mile 2 I knew I might possibly PR. The post-race area was small, but great. There was an assortment of vendors and refreshments including bagels, Christmas cookies, water, and my favorite...POWER ICE! This is definitely a great race! I cannot wait to run my next Kennesaw Grand Prix race in a few weeks - Run for Wounded Heroes 5K. If you are in the area, I definitely recommend joining me on August 1 - it is the same awesome course and supports a great cause as well.

I went to the park that morning not knowing the race was going on and watched 10 minutes of it. I thought I saw your mom (recognized her from your pictures). Too funny!
