Last year, Momma K and I learned about Footprints on the Heart from our friend Rachael. The organization assists families that have suffered from pregnancy or infant loss. Sadly, Rachael's sister had lost her newborn, Abigail, 3 years ago. It was because of them that we learned about Footprints on the Heart and the 5K and balloon release that they hold in late May. We ran the race last year and knew we needed to return again this year to support Rachael's family as well as our other friends who have suffered the loss of a baby.
Before the race, the local Boy Scout troop presented the colors and lead everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance. The 5K started first with the 1 mile walk starting shortly after. Momma K and I lined up at the start line and waited for the race to start.
As I was heading towards the turn around, the first runner heading back was coming towards me - it was Tess! She was rocking it! Her brother Kobe was not far behind holding 2nd place. I gave them both cheers as they went by. I had a pretty rough week personally the past few days which impacted my race for sure. I was disappointed in my time at first, but then I realized that I beat my 2014 time by almost 1:30. Not too shabby.
In between the 5K and the results they hosted a balloon release. Participants, volunteers, and families gather and release balloons with messages to the ones that they have lost. It is a very emotional part to the morning for sure.
