Fighting some kind of lovely crud the past few days and powered by Mucinex and cough drops this morning, I knew that this was going to be a slower race for me. My lungs are not happy and the last thing that I need to do is make myself worse -especially with a big race next week. Even holding myself back, I am still pleased with how I ran. I didn't get too fatigued until the last mile which was a positive. A huge shout out to my pal Buzz for being at the finish line to cheer me on!
Any opportunity I get to run races at Georgia Tech, I am all over it. The Pi Mile 5K hosted by the Georgia Tech Alumni Association has been a family favorite of ours the past few years and I was crazy excited to return in 2018. Momma K and I arrived to Georgia Tech about an hour before the race to make sure we had plenty of time to park, walk over to the race area, get our bibs, and use the restroom before starting. This is a very popular race, so we just wanted to make sure we had time and didn't feel rushed. A huge thank you to Georgia Tech facilities to allowing runners to use the stadium restrooms - YAY real bathrooms! I am glad that we arrived nice and early. While there was not many other runners around at 6:30ish, things really started to pick up around 7:00 and was BOOMING by 7:15! (Below is a picture from about 7am). The start line was around 200 yards or so from the pre and post race area, so we headed over about 10 minutes before the start. There were a lot of runners already lining up, so I just gauged where to start in the mass. The Pi Mile 5K takes you on a wonderful tour by foot of part of the Georgia Tech campus. Along the way you pass the aquatic center (which was home to the 1996 Olympic swimming and diving), Greek life housing, the baseball and softball facilities, as well as a long uphill stretch past Bobby Dodd stadium. The first portion of the course is pretty fast with a lot of downhill and flat sections, however just past mile 2 you hit some hills before the final stretch that is flat with minor downhill. It was an absolutely beautiful morning for a 5K around the campus of Georgia Tech. It is always a fun time running with students, alumni, faculty, friends, and family around campus. Thank you Georgia Tech Alumni Association for hosting yet another wonderful year of Pi Mile fun. See you in 2019!
