Race courses around the Chattahoochee River in Roswell tend to be some of the flattest courses around metro-Atlanta. The course features a few gentle rolling hills with only one "bigger" hill that you go up around mile 3 and coming right back down at the turn around (this hill is avoided in the 5K). There is also a stretch of about 1/2 mile that is on a gravel road, but it isn't bad at all (and that is coming from a girl who doesn't do trails).
Thankfully, it was a fairly overcast morning with a lot of the course being in the shade so the sun didn't play much of a factor in the heat or my eye situation. It was still quite toasty out there...correction, it was gross. While a lot of runners in the South tend to focus more on cross training or even take summer months off due to the heat/humidity, I still go out and get it done. I take different precautions such slowing down my pace, wearing light clothing, extra hydration, etc.
