Spring is in the air in Georgia which led to a beautiful weekend to take advantage of for sure! Last fall, my parents and I found a love for going to Stone Mountain Park. While the park offers a wide variety of different activities (skylift, railroad, ropes courses, etc), we simply enjoy going and hiking to the top of the mountain (2 miles round trip).
Saturday - April 4 - Stone Mountain Park If you have been keeping up with me over the past few years, you know that I race most weekends. The last time that I have had a "race-free weekend" was in January. Just because I don't have a race to run doesn't mean that the training and being active gets pushed aside. Random story for you.... We arrived to Stone Mountain Park around 10am and our plans were to hike up and down the mountain and then get a few extra miles in afterwards. When we arrived to the park, I went to use the restroom while mom and dad got their stuff ready. As I stood waiting for Momma K and Papa J to meet me, a guy comes up to me with his dog and asked me to hold the dog while he went to the restroom. Needless to say, Momma K was quite surprised to see me with a dog when she got out of the car. Meet Murphy. Now, before I get any comments about how dangerous it is to hold a something for a stranger or about how he could have kidnapped me, I was standing in a very well populated area and my parents were about 50 feet away. Plus, I never agreed to hold Murphy - he was kind of just passed off to me suddenly. I can't make this stuff up - haha! When the owner came back he ended up sharing some info on the running paths with us. Win-win! The mountain was quite crowded due to it being a beautiful day, spring break, and Easter weekend. It was great seeing so many families and people out enjoying the day for sure. There are some parts of the hike that get pretty steep and slick. You are climbing up a giant piece of granite and it gets slick for sure. You don't have to be a "hiker" to enjoy climbing up Stone Mountain. As I mentioned, it does have some steep parts and can be a little challenging at times, but there are plenty families doing it together. I do recommend being in appropriate physical condition for going up the walking trail. The views along the way are absolutely beautiful and totally worth the 1-mile journey! After trekking up and down the mountain we decided to head a mile over to the village and lawn area to get drinks. Yes, we did another 2 miles round trip to go get drinks. Yes, we could have driven the car to that area of the park, but what is the fun in that? There are a lot of shops, dining option, and attractions in this area which makes it a focal point of the park. We foresee a number of additional trips to Stone Mountain Park this spring and early summer and definitely again in the fall. If you have never been to Stone Mountain Park, I highly recommend it for a great day of fitness fun. Saturday - April 5 - Easter Sunday Since it is just Momma K, Papa J and myself here our holidays are very small and simple. We started the morning off with a small family breakfast and did some work around the yard. WIth a quick trip to Lowes, Momma K's planted area looks quite fabulous! After a quick afternoon nap (which I rarely get to take), we all headed out to the park to get a few miles in. While a small part of me may wish that I could just lay around the house all day, goals don't happen without work. We went to our local park which was quite a happenin' place this afternoon. A lot of large groups and families were having egg hunts and picnics today which gave us a change of scenery. We ended up doing 3.25 miles today as a family which is always nice. Holidays are about spending time with the ones you love and I am happy that we could spend this weekend together as a fit family. Whether you celebrate Easter or Passover, I send you a happy holiday greeting! It is time to start a new week - remember to make it what you want it to be and BE AWESOME!
