Winter Storm Decima came ripping through the midwest mid-week and before I knew it I received the dreaded email on Friday afternoon from the race with the subject "***ATTENTION HALF MARTHON PARTICIPANTS***" I knew right then what I was about to read. Yep, due to projected windchills below zero and ice accumulations, the half marathon was canceled. However the 5K was still projected to go on. After a wonderful call with the race director and getting first hand account of what was playing out in Indianapolis. Based on my conversation with Bryan about the situation, I decided that it was in my best interest to just stay put this weekend.
After making this decision at 7pm on Friday, I decided to go run the Atlanta Christmas 5K with Momma K. Rather than sending my Friday night packing, I was laying out a flat runner instead.
Lining up to start was a little bit chaotic as we were walking one way, however the race would start the other way. This meant that it was difficult for everyone to line up appropriately according to pace.
The race had a slightly new course this year. Last year there were some pretty tough hills along most of the way, but this year it was a lot more forgiving. They advertised it as a "fast course", however there was one pretty long hill in the final mile. I pushed through the hill and made it to mile 3 where we had a nice little downhill finish. Unexpectedly, I finished with my 2nd fastest 5K ever (only missing my PR by a few seconds).
