Fueling and Recovering with Tailwind Nutrition

3/30/2018

Disclaimer: I received Tailwind Nutrition products in exchange for a product review and no other compensation was received.  All thoughts are strictly my own and real based on my experience.
I am not one that can do gels or pills for hydration, electrolytes and calories on the run.  I just can't do it, so I rely strictly on fluids (and the occasional food).  Even with using fluids for fuel I have to be careful.  Most "sports drinks" cause me to get extremely nauseous and give me "gut bombs" almost instantly.  I need hydration/fuel that is light, not too sweet, and not too "much" in general.
I have heard nothing but great things about Tailwind Nutrition from my friends and how gentle it was, so I was pretty stoked to check it out myself.  When first checked out the Tailwind Nutrition website to see what makes them different, there were a few things that really stood out to me:
  • Complete calories, electrolytes, and hydration in one
  • Easy on the stomach - no gut bombs
  • Clean, light flavors taste better the longer you go.
  • Dissolves on contact with water and cleans up with a quick rinse
  • All natural:  no dyes or preservatives

Tailwind hooked me up with samples from both their Endurance Fuel line and their new Recovery line - both of which I was excited to try out!
TAILWIND ENDURANCE FUEL
With all of my long runs leading up to my 100th half marathon earlier this month and warmer weather trying to come to Atlanta (even though it has been hit or miss), my nutrition and hydration are key.  As the heat of summer is approaching, locking in my fueling strategy now will help immensely.  I was excited to give Tailwind Endurance Fuel a go and of course try out ALL the flavors!
So what is in Tailwind Endurance Nutrition exactly?
  • Non-GMO Dextrose (Glucose)
  • Non-GMO Sucrose
  • Citric Acid
  • Sodium Citrate
  • Sea Salt
  • Organic Flavor
  • Potassium Chloride
  • Magnesium Citrate
  • Calcium Carbonate
  • Organic Caffeine (Caffeinated flavors only)
  • Gluten free/vegan/no soy/no dairy

Tailwind is designed for absorption with the combination of fuel, electrolytes, and water has a synergistic effect to absorb those nutrients and fuel your muscles and replenish those electrolytes sweated out.

The absorption and natural ingredients help your stomach digest those nutrients properly and leaves you fueled and hydrated without angrying your stomach.  Even if a product replenishes nutrients, having 'gut bomb" negates those benefits...especially mid-run!
Picture
Tailwind Endurance Fuel comes in two forms: multi-serving bags (30 servings and 50 servings) as well as stick packs (2 servings).  So If you are looking to try out different flavors or want a pre-portioned on the go option, the stick packs are perfect.  Each stick pack comes in a "tear and pour" pouch that you add to your water bottle with 20-24oz of water, give a shake, and you are ready to take on the road or trails ahead and should last you approximately an hour.  For those filling hydration packs/bladders, the multi-serving bags are best because you can scoop out whatever you need and add it to the water in the pack.  You can also package the multi-serving packs into individual servings in baggies, bottles, containers, etc for on the go use.

My Thoughts
I won't lie, even after hearing nothing but amazing things about Tailwind, I was still crazy nervous about it upsetting my stomach.  So many different products have done me wrong over the years, that I can't help but be skeptical.  I am happy to report that Tailwind passed my stomach test!  No gut bombs! WEEEEEEEEEEE!

The flavors were all very light and crisp tasting.  They were not overly potent  nor overly sweet - which is a typical issue with other sports drinks and electrolyte replacements.  The flavors were a nice hint of flavor to help give life to your water but not something that you will get tired of or have to choked down on the run.

I admit it, I am a bit of a caffeine addict and enjoy that boost I get from it, so the caffeinated flavors (Tropical Buzz, Green Tea Buzz and Raspberry Buzz) were naturally a hit for me.  Don't worry, they aren't crazy caffeinated, just a hint.  My top flavors were Berry, Mandarin Orange, and Raspberry Buzz.  My least favorites were the Green Tea (I don't like tea of any kind though) and the Naked Unflavored (I like a hint of flavor).  Those are just my personal opinions though :)
TAILWIND RECOVERY DRINK
A new addition to the Tailwind Nutrition line is their recovery products, Tailwind Recovery.  It is the first sport recovery drink made with a perfectly complete protein of organic rice protein and amino acids along with added carbohydrates, fats from coconut milk and electrolytes (source: Tailwind Nutrition).  Tailwind Recovery helps repair your muscles and quickly restores your energy.
Tailwind Recovery comes in two flavors: chocolate and vanilla, both of which are Non-GMO/Gluten free/vegan/no soy/no dairy and have natural ingredients and organic flavors.
Tailwind Recover Ingredients:
Vanilla:
Non-GMO Dextrose, Non-GMO Sucrose, Coconut Milk Powder, Essential Amino Acids (L-Leucine, LLysine, L-Valine, L-lsoleucine, L-Phenylalanine, L-Threonine, L-Methionine, L-Histidine, L-Tryptophan), Non-GMO Organic Rice Protein Powder, Sea Salt, Potassium Chloride, Organic Vanilla Flavor, Calcium Carbonate, Magnesium Citrate

Chocolate: Non-GMO Dextrose, Non-GMO Sucrose, Coconut Milk Powder, Essential Amino Acids (L-Leucine, LLysine, L-Valine, L-lsoleucine, L-Phenylalanine, L-Threonine, L-Methionine, L-Histidine, L-Tryptophan), Non-GMO Organic Rice Protein Powder, Cocoa Powder, Sea Salt, Potassium Chloride, Calcium Carbonate, Magnesium Citrate
(Source: Tailwind Nutrition)

Tailwind Recovery instructions are simple: mix a packet of Tailwind Rebuild with 16oz (500mL) of water and shake. For best results, drink within 30 minutes of exercise and for longer or more intense workouts, drink another packet of Tailwind Rebuild in the another 30 minutes.

My Thoughts
I have never used a recovery drink to be honest.  As weird as it sounds, my body does a great job recovering with my active recovery afterwards and I just never think about it much.   When I do get fatigued most is after long cross-training and HIIT workouts.  Tailwind Rebuild is awesome to keep in my gym bag and ready to go after those grueling sessions because it is soooo easy and isn't chalky or chunky like some recovery drinks.   The taste isn't too heavy at all and I love the flavors of vanilla and chocolate - it is like a little post race treat.
Tailwind Nutrition is a great addition to my fueling and recovery routine.  With my intense HIIT workout and mileage increasing over the next few months, both Tailwind Endurance Fuel and Tailwind Recovery will likely be staples in my routine. You can locate their products at a store near you here.  To see the entire Tailwind Nutrition product line and learn more about how it can help you fuel and recover, check out Tailwind Nutrition online:

Knowing that I love a good challenge, people often ask me "what is next" in terms of my race goals.  Heck, why not head to Roanoke, VA take on America's Toughest Road Race in 2018!?!?  The Blue Ridge Marathon has THE MOST elevation change of any road race in the United States earning it the “toughest” road marathon status.  While I am taking on the half marathon, I will still have over 3700+ ft of an elevation climb over the 13.1 miles in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Preparing for the 2018 Pittsburgh Marathon Steel Challenge

3/27/2018

If you have followed my blog for a while, you know that I love races and especially race challenges.  I mean, come on, extra races and bonus bling?  I am THERE!

A few years ago, a new challenge was added to the Dick's Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon weekend by putting runners up to the test of completing the UPMC Health Plan/UPMC Sports Medicine Pittsburgh 5K on Saturday followed by one of the Sunday distances (DICK'S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon, the UPMC Health Plan Pittsburgh Half Marathon or the FedEx Ground Pittsburgh Marathon Relay). Upon completion of your Sunday race, you earn the title of Steel Challenge finisher and earn some sweet bonus bling!

Yes, it is a challenge, that is why it is the called the Steel Challenge!  Trust me though, with proper training and planning, you can have a very successful race weekend in May.  As a finisher of three Steel Challenges (and numerous other multi-race challenges over the years), I wanted to share a few of my top tips for training and completing the 2018 Steel Challenge.

Game Plan
What are your Pittsburgh Marathon weekend goals?  When coming up with your training plan for the Steel Challenge, you will want to think of what your plan is for the weekend.  Do you plan to race or attempt to PR the 5K?  Maybe you want to use the 5K as a shakeout run (a VERY popular strategy) and get ready to CRUSH Sunday's race.  Whatever your choice is, go into your training with that strategy and practice it.
TRAIN!
When you are training for a half marathon or full marathon, the thought of a 5K might start to feel like "it is JUST a 5K."  Just like your long runs for your marathon, half marathon or relay leg, you need to train your body for a 5K the day before.  It can be something as an easy 2 miles the day before your long run, but you need to get those extra miles on your legs.  If your strategy is to run hard in the 5K, run hard on those training runs, however if you are using the 5K as a shakeout, take it easier.
Practice Refueling
After a run, I will admit that I like to treat myself to a little "splurge" for breakfast...I mean, donuts are tasty and a great treat.  While you might be tempted to load up after the 5K, you will have to remember that the food/drink that you are putting in your body is going to be your fuel for Sunday.  During your training, don't forget to practice what your race weekend tactics might be in terms of refueling from your 5K all while gearing up for Sunday's race.  Trust me, save that crazy celebratory meal for Sunday after your cross that finish line.
Rest Those Legs
After finishing Saturday's 5K, remember that your legs need to be ready for Sunday!  No, I am not saying to sit around doing nothing, but you need to take care of those legs that have to carry you through the marathon, half marathon, or relay in a few hours.  Take some time to foam roll, stretch, ice bath, epsom salt bath, or whatever it is that works for you.  Those coming from out of town such as myself might want to spend the day on your feet touring Pittsburgh.  That is ok for a bit to let those legs stay loose, but don't over do it.  Tomorrow is a big day!

I HIGHLY recommend taking on the Steel Challenge during Pittsburgh Marathon weekend!  It is such a fun challenge to complete over the weekend and is definitely possible and manageable if you go into it with a plan and trained.  While each runner's goals, training, and bodies are different, going into the weekend with a plan can make crossing those finish lines a reality!

If you haven't signed up for Pittsburgh Marathon weekend, what are you waiting for!?!?  It is going to be an awesome time and I would love for you to come run with me on May 6th!

Need an extra bit of motivation?  Check out the 2018 Steel Challenge bling!  I cannot wait to earn mine on May 6th!

Charles Harris 10K - March 10, 2018

3/26/2018

It feels like it has been a long time since I got to run a 10K - like legit run a 10K (not play around running).  Actually, it been over a year since I last ran a 10K for time.  I was excited to go back to the 10K distance to switch things up a bit and also hopefully earn a proof of time for upcoming races that require a 10K or longer time for placement at the Charles Harris 10K.  I have heard such wonderful things about the Charles Harris 10K over the past few years from friends, and I finally had the chance to run it this year.
Picture
The course is a point to point course with the start line at Tucker High School and the finish line at Druid Hills Middle School.  Due to logistics and limited parking, race parking was at North Dekalb Mall with shuttles running to the start (and from the finish afterwards).  A lot of races that I have done with shuttles have been nightmares to say the least (long lines, long periods of time between shuttles, etc) so Jennifer and I decided to get to North Dekalb Mall in time for the first shuttle to avoid race stress.

Packet pick-up was easy-peasy and the crowd quickly grew shortly after we arrived.  The bib pickup was in the gym of Tucker High School and super informal.  Rather than volunteers handing out bibs, the bibs were organized on a table by last name and you grabbed your bib and pins.  The best part?  We got to hang out indoors and use indoor restrooms before heading out to the start line.
Picture
There was a gear check that took your gear for after the race to the finish area at Druid Hills Middle School which was a nice bonus for sure.  It was a crazy cold morning, but there was a little chill in the air, so it great to have a jacket before and after the race.  Everyone headed out to the start line about 15 minutes before the race and got the run down on the course and last minute instructions.
Picture
Picture
There were about 300 runners on hand and number wheelchair athletes with their partners there to push them along the 6.2 mile course.  You may have seen some of the Kyle Pease team at races, especially in the Atlanta area but they attend races all over from 5Ks to Ironmans.  To learn more about the Kyle Pease Foundation, check out their website www.kylepeasefoundation.org.

Just before the 7:45 start gun went off, we were greeted with an absolutely amazing sunrise.  Wheelchairs went off first, followed by runners a few minutes later.
Picture
What an AMAZING course!  This is definitely one of the top 10K courses that I have ran in the Atlanta area.  Is it super scenic?  No.   However the hills are mild (except the last 1/3 of a mile) and features a lot of gradual downhill throughout the 6.2 mile course with a drop of about 100 feet from start to finish.

The coolness in the air?  That went away pretty quickly.  As soon as you got in the sun it warmed up rather quickly and my arm sleeves were gone by the 5K point.  There was still a nice breeze though, so it was quite comfortable.

Despite a battle with my allergies giving me fits the last two miles and difficulties breathing as a result, I still rocked out my second fastest 10K time!
Picture
Once crossing the finish line, you were greeted with water and headed about 100 yards up to the Druid Hills Middle School gym for the post-race activities.  I won't lie, my heart sang when I saw they had Coke waiting for you!  YES, please!

Inside the gym you received your race shirt, collected your gear check bag and waited for awards.  Due to having other things scheduled this morning, I didn't stick around for awards, but having them indoors was great!  This is always a huge plus for me any time of the year, so thank you Druid Hills Middle School for opening your doors to the post-race activities.
Picture
Picture
I cannot believe that the Charles Harris 10K has been around for thirty-eight years and this is the first time I got to run it.  This is a hidden gem of Atlanta racing and one that I will for sure be back for again next year.  It is a low-frills race, but one of the absolute best courses of metro-Atlanta.  If you are looking for a potential PR race, I would highly suggest checking out the Charles Harris 10K in 2019.

Five Reasons to Add Hotlanta Half Marathon to Your Summer Calendar

3/23/2018

Disclaimer: I am a 2018 Hotlanta Half Marathon Ambassador which provides me with entry to the race, however all thoughts are strictly my own.
This June, Hotlanta Half Marathon will be having its 5th running.  Wow!  Five years already?!?!  I will be honest, when I signed up for my first Hotlanta Half Marathon, I was nervous as to what to expect running in Atlanta in the middle of summer but I instantly fell in love with this race!

In order to get you ready for running the Hotlanta Half Marathon on June 10, 2018, here are my top five reasons to run the Hotlanta Half Marathon this year.
1. Awesome Course Support
I don't know about you, but I totally feed off of course support.  Whether it is a bullhorn, cowbells, signs, or dressing like a T-Rex, I love all the course support that is out in full force for the Hotlanta Half.  Many different local running groups come out and cheer at various parts of the race course which makes for a great time.  Granted, I know a lot of these enthusiastic spectators, but even if you don't know them, they are there to cheer for YOU on race day.

2. Scenic Tour of Atlanta
I can never get enough of running through downtown Atlanta.  There are so many different places to check out on any race course in Atlanta.  From historical sites to sporting event facilities and tourist destinations, there is a lot that Atlanta has to offer.  Hotlanta Half Marathon does a fabulous job of taking runners through some of the best that Atlanta has to offer.  Along the way, you pass Centennial Olympic Park, Turner Field (now the former home of the Atlanta Braves), run under the Olympic Rings, a loop through Piedmont Park, a tour of Georgia Tech, and even a stretch on the Atlanta Beltline (which is pretty darn flat).  Atlanta Natives and those who have never been to Atlanta can all really appreciate the beauty of the city brought to you via the 13.1 mile Hotlanta Half Marathon course.

3. Stay Cool and Hydrated
Does summer running in the South have you worried?  Don't be!  Hotlanta Half Marathon always takes runner safety very seriously.  They always have ample water & nuun stations along the way, but even when scorching temps came in for last year's race, they stepped it up even more and added additional stations along the way.  In addition, several cheer stations along the way had ice towels out that really helped keep you cool along the way.
Picture
Picture
4. Finish Line Festival at Pemberton Place
Pemberton Place is a big part of the downtown area.  Located right near the Georgia Aquarium, World of Coca-Cola, and Centennial Olympic Park, Pemberton Place is a great area for races in the area.  There is ample parking to accommodate large numbers of runners, indoor restroom facilities, area attractions near by, and a large space for runners to visit sponsors and vendors and hang out a bit post race with family and friends.
Picture
5.  Sweet Bling
I admit it, I love some great bling.  Hotlanta Half Marathon always has some pretty sweet bling for sure.  No generic circle medals here, folks.  Nope, Hotlanta Half Marathon knows that runners love some great medals and always has some of the best medals each year.  These medals definitely stand out in my medal collection and I cannot wait to see what they have in store for us this year.
Picture

Picture
2017 Hotlanta Half Medal
There are so many reasons why I continue to come back for more Hotlanta Half Marathon fun each year, and those 5 reasons are just the top reasons.  Is it challenging with potentially hot weather?  Yea.  Is it hilly?  Ummm, it IS Atlanta (so yes).  Is it a great time and a well supported race in the Atlanta community?  HECK YEA!
Ok, so who is joining me on June 10?  Head over to HotlantaHalf.com and register today and use code BRANDIHHM5 to save an extra $5 off of your registration.  I hope to see you there!

Rumble Roller Beastie Review

3/22/2018

Disclaimer: I received a Rumble Roller Beastie in exchange for a product review and no other compensation was received.  All thoughts are strictly my own and real based on my experience.
With a 1400 day run streak and just completing my 100th lifetime half marathon, taking care of my body on a daily basis is more important than ever.  Let's face it though, each of us needs to take proper care of our bodies and athletes need to practice good recovery.  I admit it, I am not the best about helping my body recover or stretching, but I try to make it a priority in my routine.

Most athletes regardless of their sport has probably had an encounter or two with a foam roller.  I like to say that I have had a "love-hate" or "hurts so good" relationship with foam rolling over the past few years.  No matter how much you love it (or love to "hate" it), foam rolling is so beneficial for athletes in recovery and injury prevention.

While traditional foam rollers are good tools, there are a lot of hard to reach spots deep down that they don't reach.  After getting a deep tissue massage recently, I was amazed at the spots that my therapist was able to hit with her thumbs.  Dang, why can't I get that deep tissue treatment on the regular.  Well,
the Rumble Roller team reached out to me about try out a deep-tissue massage tool, Beastie, and it looked like a resolution to my desire for a regular deep-tissue massage at home.
Picture
The Beastie is a deep-tissue massage tool created with 32 firm, flexible bumps that are placed to break through the limitations of other massage balls and rollers.  There are two different versions of the Beastie: Original (clear) which is firm but still flexible and X-firm (green) is extremely firm.  Factors in selecting your ideal Beastie include your tolerance for pain and your planned use.  For those with lesser tolerance for pain and/or using the the Beastie on the floor with full weight, the Original (clear) version is suggested and those with higher pain tolerances or using against a wall, the X-firm is typically better suited.
Picture
Picture
While a foam roller is great for most of your day-to-day needs, the Beastie is prefect for when you have knots or trouble spots that traditional foam rollers can't reach well.  The Beastie provides you with a deep and focused treatment with its firm bumps that reach those hard to reach muscles and knots.

The Beastie is also perfect for on the go needs as it is fairly small (about the size of a tennis ball) so it can go in suitcases, gym bags, desk, etc.  Is it possible to whip out a foam roller and get on the floor of the office?  Probably not for most people.  With the Beastie, you can use it in a chair or on the wall for relief just about anywhere.
Picture
With all of my running and cross-training, it is probably no surprise that my hips and glutes are always crazy tight!  No matter how much stretching, yoga, and foam rolling I do, there are so many deep down spots that I can still feel stiffness.  Obviously, this is the first spot that I took my Beastie to.  OH MY STARS!  When they say that the X-firm model in intense, they are not lying!  I instantly felt the Beastie hitting those hot spots that were only able to be released by a therapist in the past.  Yes, it was intense, but man oh man did it 'hurt so good'.  As with any therapy, the more that I did it, the more I got acclimated to it and those tight spots got worked out over time.
Picture
One spot that I for sure thought got enough TLC with my normal foam rolling and stretching were my calf muscles.  Well, the Beastie on my calf proved me wrong.  The cool thing about the Beastie is that the base is removable so you are able to use it in a mobile state and roll it under you, or you can stabilize it by putting it into the base.  I find that I am to have more control with the Beastie with it out of the base so I can 'roll' it under each muscle I want to pinpoint.
Picture
With a runstreak approaching 1400 days and the completion of my 100th half marathon, it is obvious that my feet and legs probably need a little extra love every now and then.  The deep pressure I was able to get using the Beastie under my feet (primarily with my arches) was a-ma-zing!  Getting to those trouble spots in your feet can be tricky but Beastie hit them perfectly.

With a little lighter pressure, I put the Beastie in my hand to rub on tight spots in my quads.  I am glad I used a less intense massage here because laying on it with full pressure would have been too much for me (at least for now), but this just shows the flexibility and options you have with using your Beastie.
Picture
Picture
Rumble Roller also offers optional accessories for the Beastie for different uses and greater intensity.  To learn more about the Beastie accessories, head over to the Rumble Roller website.

Rumble Roller carries a number of different foam roller tools that can help you better recover, get ready for what tomorrow brings, and just say "thank you" to your body.  You can locate their products at a store near you here.  To see the entire Rumble Roller collection, learn more about foam rolling, and check out different techniques to help your body, follow Trigger Point Therapy online:

A HUGE thank you to the Rumble Roller team for having my foam rolling being 'on point' and introducing me to the massage ball!  Remember, a few minutes a day can make a difference in your running, training, and even day to day activities.  Your body goes through a lot (even not working out), so take care of your body and release that muscle tightness.

Chattahoochee Road Runner 5K - March 3, 2018

3/21/2018

For a few months now, I have had this race marked as a "goal race" for myself - the Chattahoochee Road Runner 5K.  I bonked at my last two 5K PR attempts in the Fall and was ready for redemption.  In 2016 I 10K PR'ed this race by 4 minutes just a day and a half after being in a major car wreck, but totally crashed and burned at the 5K last year.

After 9 days at Disney and a 8 hour car ride home, I was prepping my race day stuff before I even unpacked the night we got home.  Even though I would have given about anything to stay in my warm bed just a bit longer, it was race morning.
Picture
The course is a point to point course with the finish line being just a 5-10 minute walk or so away from the start line.  Due to construction in the area, parking was prohibited at the start area, so we parked at the finish line and took the short walk to the start.  Despite being told numerous times about the walk to the start (and emails leading up to race day), many runners did not realize that the start was not where they parked.  There was a mad rush of runners coming up to the start just as the horn went off - and some even missed the start.
Picture
Picture
Chattahoochee Road Race features a 5K and 10K with both races starting together.  Even with several hundred runners between the two distances, the course never felt too crowded and everyone really started themselves correctly in the starting area by pace.

I surprisingly felt great - I thought I would be totally exhausted from the past week (especially the drive home yesterday).  The first mile actually ended up being my fastest race mile ever!  The 5K made a u-turn at about the 1.5 mile mark to head back towards the finish while the 10K continued ahead for another 1.5 miles before making the turn to head back.  The course is pretty amazingly flat for Atlanta standards, but the true beauty of the course is that the last 3/4 mile is slightly downhill (with a small hill in the middle of it).

With my fastest mile the first mile along with two consistent miles for 2 and 3, I crushed my PR by a minute!  FINALLY!  Third attempt was the charm.  What is funny is that this was an official PR attempt for me.  While I was trained for my PR, I mentally didn't think it would happen due to my exhaustion.  It is funny how your body works sometimes though.

Picture
After crossing the finish line I got some post race goodies including chips, soup and grilled cheese sandwiches.  There were also a few other vendors in the finish area as well as a DJ and race awards happening.

It is a great course to run and get your qualifying times for future races or a new PR on.  While I got a one minute 5K PR, I am ready to come back stronger in 2019 for a new PR (and hopefully will be a little better rested, fueled, etc before race day).  I am not sure quite yet if I will be taking on the 5K or 10K....

Princess Half Marathon - February 25, 2018

3/20/2018

Months of training made up of early morning long runs and hundreds of cold miles logged comes down to this.  It is time for the 2018 Princess Half Marathon!  With the 5K and 10K the past two days and very early wake-ups on those days, it was pretty easy to go to sleep early so we were rested before our 2:00am wake-up.  I will tell anyone, one of the absolute hardest parts of multi-runDisney race weekends are the insane wake-ups several days in a row.  Before the sun set over Walt Disney World, we had our clothes laid out and were nestled in bed.
Picture
Typically I don't sleep well before a big race (especially at Disney), but for some reason I had a decent sleep.  Don't get me wrong, it was still a stupid and ridiculous time to wake up.  Seriously, runners are pretty dumb - we wake up at horrific hours to go run silly distances....and we pay to do it!  Honestly though, I love it and wouldn't trade it for the world (even a few extra hours of sleep).

Despite crazy bus drama yesterday for the 10K, today was much easier and we had a bus at our stop before 3am waiting to pull out when buses started at 3am.  Security was a breeze and we made our way to Race Retreat to relax and eat breakfast before heading to the corrals.

If you have ever ran the Walt Disney World Marathon or Princess Half Marathon at Walt Disney World, you know about the crazy walk out to corrals.  If you haven't ran one of these races, the walk to the corrals is about a mile.  Along the way you encounter the shuffles of runners on a narrow road wrapped in heat sheets, people sharing nervous and excited feelings, and of course the critical final porto-potty stop before the start line.
We made our way into our corral.  For the first time in five years, I was running the Princess Half Marathon without Momma K by my side.  She told me to go on and run the race in the corral that I had and enjoy the race.

Each corral went off a few minutes apart with cheers, fireworks and fan fare.  Finally around 5:40 we were sent on our way by.

The first mile went by quickly.  Even though it was just a dark road (well lit though), the excitement and energy was great.  Yes, a lot of runners were around but everyone seemed to have their polite princess behavior on.  There was an awesome high school band greeting us along with some super energetic volunteers at the first water station.
Before we knew it we were approaching one of my favorite parts of this course - running through the Magic Kingdom toll plaza!  Between the magical glow of the lights and the sound of "caution runners, speed bump ahead" on repeat, I get giddy each and every time.

I started the race with my friend Jill but we ended up getting separated at the water station around the 5K mark.  Luckily I pulled off for a photo op with the Witch from Snow White at mile 4 and ran into my sweet friend Kara there!  We chatted it up while in line and both of us were running solo and had the same goal of having fun so we joined forces for the final 9 miles.

What is one of the best way to a princesses heart? PRINCES of course!  A few of your favorite princes were out for photo ops, but we resisted stopping here as the lines were pretty insane.
Picture
After about 4 miles of course support only from fellow runners and volunteers, it was good to see some signs and hear cowbells ringing.  Oh!  ...and the beat of these drums!  I wouldn't dare complain about my legs being tired because these folks are beating on drums for 20,000+ runners to go by for probably close to two hours if I had to guess.
Picture

As we made our way from the Ticket & Transportation Center towards the Magic Kingdom, I noticed all of the amazing men running with their princesses.  Even better was the way that they were all being so supportive of them.  Whether if it was their daughter, wife, or other relation, they encouraged their princess along the way.  Huge thank you to all the princes out there today!
We continued our journey towards the Magic KIngdom we passed the Contemporary Resort which included some great cheers and the smell of breakfast coming from Chef Mickey's.  Ok, so I don't know if that is really where it was coming from, but every year at that point in time I dream of the breakfast awaiting me after I cross the finish line.

Magic Kingdom here we come!  In the past we ran through a backstage gate near Space Mountain that dumps into Main Street, but a slight course change due to construction meant that we got to run through the front gate and onto Main Street!
Picture
Momma K and I have a rule for entering Main Street - NO WALKING.  Heck, you can walk down Main Street any time, it is time to "break the rules" and RUN!  Plus you have hundreds of people cheering for you - show them what you got!  Don't forget to look good for the pictures too. ;-)

It isn't a runDisney weekend without a friend popping out and surprising everyone, and this weekend was no different.  Ivie ended up flying out from California and making the weekend even more magical!  I knew she was coming a few days ago to help coordinate her grand surprise, but it was a fun surprise of a text to receive when I was packing earlier in the week.

With a right turn as you approached the hub, you enter into the futuristic world of Tomorrowland.  A quick tour leads you past Stitch's Great Escape, Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin, Tomorrowland Speedway, Mad Tea Party, and more

As we went through Tomorrowland and Fantasyland, we ran into a few familiar faces including our pal Buzz Lightyear and the well-know Queen of Hearts.

Belle & Gaston greeted runners in front of Gaston's Tavern and I really wanted to stop, but MAN that line was one of the longest character lines I have ever seen.  A quick snap by Kara in front of Gaston's Tavern would have to suffice.

Next stop: Cinderella Castle!  Well, not without a quick stop to try to pull that darn sword out of the stone.  No such luck - maybe next year.  Evil Stepmother and the Stepsisters were guarding that castle trying to stake claim on it, but the princesses were not going to let that happen.

There is always anxiety about how crowded it will be going through the castle and if you will get to "run" through it or "shuffle" through a bottleneck.  When Kara and I made it through, the crowd was fairly light.  Not empty, but not a total bottleneck.

Once you exit the castle, take a quick swing to the left and get your official castle photo done.  It takes a few minutes (if that), but it is so worth it!

As we started to make our way out of Magic Kingdom, we had to stop for a quick potty stop at real bathrooms in Frontierland.  After taking advantage of the bathrooms, we had to get photos with our pal Woody and Goofy in with frontier attire.

Have you ever felt like you were hit by a train mid-race?  Well, there's a photo stop for that.  Ok, so the point of the train photo isn't for photos like these, but I couldn't resist the opportunity.

Now it is time for the part of the course that I "dread."  From around mile 6.5 until 9ish, you run mostly on a single lane of road which makes for a pretty congested course.  As long as people utilize race etiquette, everyone can still have a good experience.

Now it is time for my yearly public service announcement...every year I see at least one runner that insists that they are going to run on the other side of the road.  People, the cones dividing the lanes is diving the running lane from the open traffic lane!  I cringe every single time I see this!  Please be safe and don't run in lanes that are open to traffic!
Around mile 7ish you pass the Grand Floridian Hotel which features my absolute favorite "character" on course - Richard.  If you don't know who Richard is, he is the most amazing greeter at Disney.  Don't tell Mickey, but Richard is a close second to my favorite thing about Walt Disney World!  Richard is awesome - go find him at Grand Floridian and chat with him a bit!  On Friday when I went to 1900 Park Fare for brunch, Richard greeted me in front of the Grand Floridian.  We were chatting about the race and he told me that he would be out there waiting for my sweaty hug on Sunday and there he was.  <3

HUGE HUGE HUGE kuddos to whoever at runDisney made the decision to put ice cold sponges on course at mile 10!  Y'all, as a girl from the South, I run in warm weather a lot.  This year's Princess Half Marathon was one of the absolute warmest of the six that I have ran.  It was no joke - especially from those up north that haven't ran in warm weather in months.  THANK YOU runDisney for helping keep us a tad bit cooler as we hit one of the toughest parts of the course.
Picture
We were up to the final mile!  I knew that my friend Danielle (correction: my friend Chris' wife, Danielle) and the Disney Moms Panel Crew (and friends) would be out at "Celebrity Corner" waiting for us!  We totally heard them before we saw them.  I don't know what was better, their chEARs or their really awesome signs.  Seriously, the Disney Moms Panel comes out in full force and has a strong cheEAR game.  Oh, and since they are moms, they totally had snacks for us!  <3 Thank you, friends, we really needed that last surge!

Just as we started to enter EPCOT, Mrs Incredible was waiting for us.  Since we couldn't pass her up (that would be rude), we grabbed a quick pic before making our way through the final 1/2 mile of the race.

EPCOT, we are here!  Weeeeeeeeee!  After the past few miles on the roads, it was great to be back in the parks for some fun.  While you are at mile 12+ and tired, the energy in EPCOT is what you need to finish strong.  From unsuspecting park visitors cheering you on, to the high fives from cast members, seeing Spaceship Earth, and of course the singing of that beautiful gospel choir just before the mile 13 marker.

It wouldn't be a finish line fit for a princess without Royal Mickey and Minnie waiting for you at the finish line.  Even though the finish line was 50 yards away, I couldn't resist the opportunity to snag a pic with my gal Minnie in her royal attire.

3 races, 22.4 miles, and many magical memories later - WE DID IT!  We crossed the final finish line of the 2018 Princess Half Marathon.  While I missed having Momma K by my side, I had an absolute blast with Kara.

I got my pixie dust from the Fairy Godmothers in Training just after crossing the finish line before proceeding to receive our medals from the awesome volunteers awaiting our arrival.  After the photo op with your half marathon medal, Fairy Tale Challenge finishers (10K Saturday and 1/2 Marathon on Sunday) and received their additional medals in a separate tent.

After collecting our medals and post-race refreshments, we headed back to Race Retreat to enjoy a celebratory breakfast before heading back to the resort to soak up some sun by the pool in the afternoon.

It was truly a magically wonderful weekend!  Thank you to all of my friends, runDisney staff, volunteers, emergency personnel and of course Momma K and Papa J for making the weekend everything that it was.  The memories will last a lifetime.

StrideBox - March 2018

3/19/2018

Disclaimer: A HUGE thanks to the team at StrideBox for allowing me to review their subscription box service.  While I did receive a box to review, no other compensation was received.  As always, I keep it real and all thoughts are strictly my own.
Fitness and health products can be very tricky at times to find out what works best for you.  Rather than going and dropping serious cash on products that you quickly find out that you can't stomach or don't work well for you, StrideBox lets you try various products each month before you decide to purchase large quantity packages of new products.

While every product might not be the best fit for you, you can typically find a friend that might want to try it out instead.  The best part about StrideBox
is that it is just $19.95/month and you can cancel your subscription any time if you find that you aren't enjoying your box.

Each month when I receive my StrideBox, I am honestly like a kid on Christmas morning.  I absolutely cannot wait to rip into my box and see what kind of goodies await me.
Picture
StrideBox recently started adding an optional StrideBox PLUS add-on each month.  Basically, a few weeks before your next month's box is due to ship, the team at StrideBox shoots out an email with what the next month's PLUS item is and the discounted price to add it to your box.  Adding the StrideBox PLUS item to your box is totally optional, but it is a great chance to checkout some additional brands (or get product you already love at great discounts).

The past few PLUS items have included PRO Compression socks, Orange Mud Transition Wrap, and Momentum Jewelry Wraps.  This month's Stride Box PLUS was Medal Mode Displays.  There were a few different options including a 1-medal and 3-medal option at about 47% off retail price.  I received the 1-medal Medal Mode and I already know the PERFECT medal to display on it...stay tuned.
Picture
One of the cool features of StrideBox is that each box comes with a "Stride Guide" inside.  This guide gives you a breakdown of the products as well as information such as when to use the products in your workout/run and the retail price. To be honest, I typically ignore the "Stride Guide" until I am done unloading the box so I don't ruin the surprise.
Picture

It is time to dig into this month's StrideBox and check out the goods!
Eat Your Coffee - Energy Bar - Peanut Butter Mocha
Eat Your Coffee caffeinated energy bars are organic, vegan, gluten-free, non-GMO snack bars that are caffeinated with cup full of antioxidant-rich coffee.  Most of us suffer from mid-day slumps where we can use an extra boost and with caffeine and superfoods included, you get a boost and muscle recovery all in one.

I will probably have coffee mugs thrown at me in rage, but I don't like coffee...at all.  I love the smell of coffee grounds, but despise the taste of coffee (or coffee flavored things).  Don't worry though, I have plenty of friends that will be happy to take this off my hands.
Picture
Bite Fuel - Protein Cookies - Chocolate Chip
Did someone say COOKIES!??!  Bite Fuel's Power Bites are soft chewy protein cookies that can be a  quick breakfast replacement, pre-workout snack, or a treat. Power Bites have 18g of protein packed in each bag (made with hormone free whey protein) and are non-GMO, low cholestorol and are free of gluten, preservatives and trans fats.

I get to try the chocolate chip flavor from my StrideBox, however the other Bit Fuel flavors sound just as tasty including double chocolate, snicker doodle and my personal favorite, peanut butter.  The at Bite Fuel recommend them as is from the bag or you can spice things up by dunking in milk or even over ice cream on cheat days.  YUM!
Picture
Skratch Labs - Sport Hydration - Passion Fruit
Skratch Labs Sport Hydration Drink Mix is an improved version of their Exercise Hydration Mix. - now with 10% more electrolytes.   The light passion fruit taste is enough to give you a crisp flavor without being harsh on your belly.

I have my favorite electrolyte replacement hydration, so I am not too inclined to really switch things up.  Typically when I find electrolyte mixes in my StrideBox I pass them along to friends who might be interested in the product, but the passion fruit flavor does sound pretty awesome for spring and summer...
Picture
Cramps Away - Cramp Relief
Getting muscle cramps is the worst!   Cramps Away is something that I have never seen before - I have seen capsules that work in various ways to relieve cramps, but this is a liquid form.  You put the contents of the packet into your mouth and swish in your your mouth for a few seconds then swallow.  Within 60 seconds the cramps should alleviate.

I am quite intrigued by this product and interested in the science behind it.  Hopefully it is a product I don't get to try for a while, but it is good to have on hand.

Picture
Vital4U - Vitamin C Drink - Orange Blast
Running and training obviously takes a toll on your body and the last thing you want to interrupt your training is getting sick.  I am always adding supplements such as Vitamin C and ZInc to help boost my immune system.

Vital4U Vitamin C is a ready-to-drink with Vitamin C, Zinc, and B Vitamins in one "shot".  Packaged like a lot of running gels, there is  no mixing, no water bottle, etc needed.
Picture
Losak - Waterproof Bag
I feel like I have been running in the rain most of 2018 so far (or spending the night before races doing a "go away rain dance).  Nothing can ruin a amazing run like crossing the finish line only to find that your phone got completely soaked in your pocket or running belt and now you have to hope that it powers back on.  The Losak waterproof pouch in this month's StrideBox will be perfect for those rainy runs as well as those fun in the sun days at the pool or beach this summer!
Picture
StrideBox Essentials Follow the Sun-Glasses
Speaking of fun in the sun, the sunny days of spring and summer are right around the corner (hopefully).  Now is the time to get your sunnies ready to protect your eyes from those rays as you enjoy the warmth after a long cold winter.  I was excited to find a pair of new sunglasses in my StrideBox and these are pretty sweet if I may say so.  They are super lightweight and comfortable. Now I wait for those sun filled weekends to get to enjoy them!
Picture
One final thing included this month's StrideBox was a card with a recipe for Overnight Protein Oats from Running Brina and a great Ladder Intervals Workout from City Fit Girls.  This was definitely a nice little bonus to check out and I cannot wait to try both of these out soon - that workout looks AMAZING!
Picture
Picture
As I mentioned earlier, not every sample is going to be something that directly fits your life and likes.  However, I really like the concept behind subscription boxes because you can try new things that you might not have known about before.  StrideBox does a great job providing various products for pre-run, during, and post-run needs.  The products included are definitely geared towards runners and other athletes and are a great fit for you and your fitness goals.
Picture
Question of the Day:  Have you ever tried a subscription box?  What kind of products would you like to see in an upcoming StrideBox?

Friday Five: Counting Down to Half Marathon #100 With My Top 5 Half Marathons

3/16/2018

When I ran my first half marathon on November 14, 2009, I said I was a 'one and done.'  I absolutely HATED everything about that day.  Well, maybe not eating countless pieces of pizza and taking a three hour nap afterwards.

It was a complete and total disaster.  To be completely fair and honest, I did not train for a half marathon and my longest run prior to it was a 10K.  Yes, I seriously thought "it is just a 10K twice...plus a little extra."  I had no business running that race that day, but in a weird way, I am beyond thankful that I did.  I learned a lot that day and after two year hiatus (and much better training and preparing), I returned back to the half marathon scene in  2011.  After an occasional half marathon here and there, I developed a love for the distance and quickly became obsessed with them.  Before I knew it, I was running 20+ half marathons a year.

After months of strategically planning, Sunday is the big one....half marathon #100!!!!!  When I cross the finish line of the Publix Georgia 1/2 Marathon, I will officially become a 100 Half Marathons Finisher!
Picture

As I prepare for this huge milestone on Sunday, I thought it would be fun to dedicate a Friday Five to my top five half marathon moments from the past 99 half marathons.  It has been quite a journey for sure, so it was definitely fun to look back at all those miles over the years.  In no particular order, I present my top five 13.1 moments.
1. Pittsburgh Half Marathon 2015
The 2015 Pittsburgh Half Marathon was the first time that I had been back 'home' to Pittsburgh in about 20 years.  Not only did the race weekend allow me to visit with friends and family, I got to take a beautiful 13.1 mile tour by foot through Pittsburgh.  This race has absolutely everything I wanted it to be from the course support to the scenery.  It was just perfect.  For that reason, I have come back each year since then and will continue to do so.  My heart was so full of happiness and love for this city that day and the smile never came off of my face.  It are races like these that make me love this distance more and more with each one.
Picture
2. Nike Women's Half Marathon - Washington DC 2013
Held less than two weeks after the Boston Marathon bombings, their was much heartache in the running community as I headed to Washington, DC to run the inaugural Nike Women's Half Marathon DC. I honestly did not know what to expect, but what happened in front of my eyes is something that made me realize how amazing the running community is.  We came together, ran together, hugged each other and showed that we strong and we will not live in fear.  The overall experience of running through Washington DC in the Spring was beautiful, but watching the outpouring of love and support from the community that weekend was something very new to me and made me proud to be a runner.
Picture
3.  Princess Half Marathon 2015
In 2013 I headed down to Walt Disney World for my very first runDisney race.  The 2013 Princess Half Marathon was my 6th half marathon and opened this crazy world of runDisney to me.  I think that this race was the one that really showed me how FUN half marathons could be.  Obviously not every race you run will have Mickey Mouse at the finish line for you, but the 13.1 mile journey that day really opened my heart to this distance.  I think part of the reason that I found the fun in half marathons that day was because of the running community that I met as a result of that weekend.  From the events of the weekend to the social media buzz both before and after, I met more friends than I could even imagine.  To this day, those people are still some of my absolute favorite people and ones that make this crazy running journey what it is to me today.
Picture
4. Rock n Roll Las Vegas Half Marathon 2015
This was my very first Rock n Roll race.  I had no clue what to expect, but I quickly learned that they are hella fun!  Papa J told me about the Rock n Roll Las Vegas races a few years before I actually got to run it, so I blame him for the addiction to them.  Y'all!  This was the most insanely fun I ever had on a race course.  It is one of only two times a year that the Las Vegas Strip is shut down (the other being New Year's Eve) and thousands of runners take over Las Vegas Blvd and #StripAtNight.  It was soooo windy that year (like 60mph gusts) and things were blowing everywhere - including runners.  All Momma K and I could do was laugh hysterically because it was just comical.  Life is what you make of it and we chose joy and laughter that night and had the BEST TIME EVER those 13.1 miles.  Ever since then, the Rock n Roll races became a staple to my race calendar each year and our annual trip to Las Vegas in November is a must.
Picture
5.  Publix Georgia Half Marathon 2012
After coming off of an injury in late 2011, this was a 'comeback' race for me.  I worked very closely with my podiatrist and physical therapist to comeback smart.  My doctor told me prior to toeing that start line that I would not PR this race....well, I showed him.  I ended up with a PR of about 5 minutes that day.  This race taught me a lot about determination and helped shape me into the runner I am today. This was my 3rd half marathon and first Publix Georgia Half Marathon which became my favorite hometown half marathon and still is today (hence it being my 100th celebration).
Picture
Well, here it is, time for #100.  My special celebration is planned and my 13.1 party through Atlanta is set.  I cannot thank my family, friends, and each of y'all for all of your support over the past 99 half marathons (and however many other races over the years).  It has been a wild ride, but one that I am so thankful for.
Picture
Source: 100 Half Marathons Club
I am nervous, excited, and just full of emotions to say the least.  I have worked so hard over these few years to get here and now it is time for that milestone finish line!

...and before you ask, yes, I will still be running half marathons and I have no intentions of stopping anytime in the foreseeable future. ;-)
