It was truly amazing to see these athletes that were not even 1/2 way through their 24 hour journey out there going strong. Each loop you would pass a open area with a few spectators, a race aid station with food/drinks and also where runners have set up their own aid stations for them to relax, fuel, etc along the way. We totally had the best cheer station!
Part 2 of my double race was taking part in Miles for Maria. Miles for Maria is a race held in honor of a local race director's sweet daughter who has epilepsy which funds epilepsy research. This race has different options for runners: 1 hour, 3 hours, 6 hours, 12 hours, and the grand-daddy 24 hour race! All runners completing the 6, 12, or 24 hour options are awarded finisher medals and as an added bonus if you complete 100 miles you receive a belt buckle! Now, before anyone gets too excited and thinks that I was "crazy enough" for the 24 hour challenge, I "only" did the 1 hour option. The race takes part around a small pond in Kennesaw, GA which is a loop of approximately .65 mile. There were different start times for the different time groups and our 1-hour wave started at 5pm. This gave me a fair amount of time to rehydrate and refuel some from the morning's 10K. Our heat was 4 people: myself, Momma K, Becky, and our friend Kimberly. Becky and I stuck it out together for 7 laps in the hour - she rocked her first Warrior Dash that morning and was wanting to take it easy as well. We had a blast chatting it up and offering encouraging words to those that were running the longer races. While the course was "technically" a trail it was not too technical of a course to run. There was little to no elevation changes and a mix of dirt, mulch, and wooden boardwalk. It was an absolute wonderful hour spent with friends for sure. I loved going out an supporting Maria and epilepsy research all while getting a few miles and some smiles in with friends. There is a November version of Miles for Maria and I highly recommend checking it out for your fall race schedule! Click here for more information on the November race day. Question of the Day: Have you ever done a "double race day"? What did you think of it?
