After I finished, I headed towards the finish line area to cheer on Momma K to the finish. I knew that she wouldn't be too keen on the gravel situation either, but she did so well!
The date might be December 31, but the spirit of Christmas is sticking around for one last race! The past two years I have ran the Peachtree Corners Holiday 10K with each having a different race course. Well, for 2017 they opted for a 5K only option and a totally new course again. After last year's pre-marathon meltdown on my 2nd loop, I was glad to not relive those hills again this year. Honestly, I don't know if I could have ran that course again, but with a new course for 2017 I decided to give the race another shot. Since the race fell on New Year's Eve this year, the race director wanted to start the race a little later in the morning. Hey, I won't complain about not setting a 5am alarm during my Christmas vacation. Due to the later start time, they were unable to have the streets closed, so this year's race was being held at Garrard River Park. We arrived to the race about an hour before start time which gave us ample time to eat, use the INDOOR restrooms and get our bibs. Just after 10:00, about 140 runners took off for a two loop course. Since there were so few runners, there was a lot of space to move around. What do you notice about these pictures??? Sooooo....I think I have failed several times this year to know exactly where I would be running a race. When I read that it was at a park, I assumed that the course would be a lovely paved trail running through the park. Whomp whomp. I was wrong. That my friends is why we shouldn't assume things. Imagine my shock when I realize that about half of the course would be on gravel trail. It was probably a good thing that I didn't know that I would be running on gravel half of the race. Instead I just ran to get it over with faster and get back to the concrete. A "trail" runner I am NOT. I like the pavement. I have to be real though, it wasn't too awful and I actually ran decently. After I finished, I headed towards the finish line area to cheer on Momma K to the finish. I knew that she wouldn't be too keen on the gravel situation either, but she did so well! After I finished, we hung out for awards which my buddy Brendan won his age group by 1 second! That my friends is finishing strong! The post race party was really small which was mainly water and red beans and rice which was a big hit amongst the crowd. While it wasn't my jam, a lot of others were really enjoying it. I cannot believe that my 2016 race schedule is done! It seems like just yesterday I was kicking off 2016 with the Resolution Run 4-Miler. Here I am 69 races, 10 states, and countless memories later! 2017, you have big shoes to fill, but I am excited for a new year of fun! Question of the Day: What is the biggest "course suprise" that you have had on race day?
